diy: furniture

We moved into our new apartment and it was completely unfurnished. After a couple of days of living out of our suitcases and browsing shops for closets and shelves to fit our clothes, DVDs and other stuff, we decided to go on and build them ourselves.

The biggest challenge was coming to terms with the crooked walls; the discrepancy in depth on opposite sides of our (future) closet was almost 20%.

Anyhow, we measured, weighted, stretched and compressed our clothes to get an idea of how much closet space we actually need, but in the end we figured that there isn’t such thing as “too much closet space”, so it quickly became a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling construction.

Clothes and shoes on the left-hand side and two clothes hanger bars on the right-hand side.

For the unused space around the fridge, we built shelves that soon became full of small kitchen appliances, pots and pans.

For my wife’s extensive collection of DVDs, there was 10 meters of shelf space, plus almost 3 meters of CD-space – which she quickly made disappear. I placed exactly one DVD there and the thing was packed. Oh, by the way, the coloring on the picture is all wrong. We went for white with red outlines 🙂
