perpetual calendar for house chores

Sharing a space with three people calls for good organization, unless you want to end up on a TV show like “Hoarders”. For a couple of years there was a large wall calendar with four names revolving each week, showing when it is your turn to clean the house – yes, the little yellow one on the picture 🙂 However, sometimes you conveniently “oversee” your turn or you manage to clean the whole house in 10 minutes (!?), leaving a mess for the next person to take care of it. I had a different idea.

By dividing the house chores into four areas: kitchen (K), bathroom (B), stairs and hallways (S) and assigning a position of superintendent (H) as a control instrument and general supplier for the week, I thought that if everyone cleans every week for 15 minutes, we could achieve more than before.
The roles were color-coded and the responsibilities were described in the form of a checklist.

And then the designer awoke 🙂
Instead of scribbling on a wall calendar every year, I decided to create a perpetual cleaning plan.

Every Sunday night the Superintendent (H) would turn the dial to the upcoming calendar week (KW). By doing this, everyone’s role would change, so during that week you would simply need to look for the colored letter next to your face/name and get to work 🙂

The designing process went surprisingly fast; it took me less than two hours to design, print, laminate, perforate and join the two parts, but nevertheless – it worked like a charm.

And yes, the house was never tidier 🙂
